By now, it should be obvious that diets ALONE do not
work. In the United States, some $75 billion a year is spent on dieting
products and programs - yet Americans are heavier than ever. Dieting
has become such a part of our culture that "normal" eating
by today's standards consists of some form of restriction or deprivation.
Few people eat in response to their bodies' cues of hunger
and satiety, and many mistake thirst cues for hunger, ESPECIALLY here in the desert.
Dieting, or better stated, calorie reduction, alone doesn't work because
you are merely setting your body up for starvation mode. Your body knows
that when it doesn't receive the normal or necessary number of calories
that it has to start reserving what it already has stored. So your metabolism
slows down, your body alters hunger cues and cravings and arouses feelings
of deprivation and depression.

First, let's redefine health. Health should
be measured by how you feel, not by the pounds your scale
reads or the size clothes most of your cohorts wear. Do you feel well? Do you have enough energy? Do
you feel HEALTHY? Next, forget about television or magazine
ads that show starved, sickly, airbrushed models and set
realistic, beautiful goals for yourself. Start by choosing
a realistic target weight and fitness level goal by asking yourself, "Can
I keep within five pounds of that weight for a lifetime?"
or "Have I ever been able to touch my toes with my legs straight?" (The key here is realistic and achievable.) And very importantly, make sure the time is right. Starting
a new program when you are overly stressed in other areas
of your life, or even trying to make these changes for
reasons other than your own, could make sticking to your
new program very difficult. Other realistic goals may
be to lower your blood pressure, to be able to walk a
mile in under 15 minutes, or learn a new sport.
Let's end the cycle of deprivation. Know this: it
is only in excess that anything really becomes bad for
you. So just slow down and enjoy a little piece of that
treat you love so much. Soon you will realize that it
is not a treat after all. It's just food. Learning to
make better menu choices, reading the labels on food packages
at the supermarket, exercising regularly and maintaining a positive outlook are just
a few steps to changing unhealthy habits and creating a new you. Once you get
into the "habit" of looking for healthful items
and patterns, it truly will become second nature.

"No! Not exercise!!!" All too many of us
think that exercise has to be work. Maybe you just have the wrong
outlook on exercise. Do you like to take long walks in beautiful
parks on sunshiny afternoons? Do you enjoy dancing to lively music? Or do you enjoy a bike ride through
your neighborhood on weekends? Then you might enjoy exercise! Aerobic
exercise, or any movement that utilizes great amounts of oxygen, is good for
you, too. It helps to detoxify the lungs and blood (and subsequently the rest
of the body) of all those harmful products that we inhale and ingest on a daily
basis. Aerobic activity has also been proven to lower blood pressure and LDL
levels, as well as decrease risks associated with heart disease. Most aerobic
activities also use more than one muscle group, which aids in overall body toning.
And remember, the heart is also a muscle and you need to keep it strong.
There are distinct advantages to weight bearing exercises as well. Resistance
training will help to increase bone density (which is very important as
we age and our bones become naturally more brittle), make muscles strong and lean, increase the body's rate of burning
calories (i.e., metabolism) and give your body that toned look you've been striving
for all along. If you don't love exercise now, you will when you begin
to see the results, the fruits of your labor. The increased energy, the
strength in your arms and legs, the overall sense of wellbeing will keep
you coming back for more!

Fit Physiques also offers the services of hypnosis, meditation, massage, counseling and energy medicine (e.g., Reiki) to help you meet your objectives. Hypnotherapy can be used in many ways, to reach many goals, from smoking cessation to integrating new and healthy habits, from weight loss to muscle gain, from lowering your cholesterol to increasing your memory and recall capacity. We have prerecorded Hypnotherapy and Meditation downloads and CDs available for purchase too.You may peruse and purchase the hypno-meditations used during the Reiki-Hypnotherapy sessions now by visiting our partner site, Sage & Wisdom.
Reiki is an energy healing therapy that treats the whole person - emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually. (There are other forms of energy medicine that we may utilize also, such as Jin Shin Do, Jin Shin Jyutsu, Touch for Health and Acupressure.) It usually feels like a warm radiance over your skin, which leaves you feeling relaxed and refreshed, with a sense of peace and security. The word Reiki means "Universal Life Force" and that is the energy that is used. There are no special requirements or limitations to receiving this treatment. (More on the "About" Page.)
